I had the good fortune to recently see the smashing Broadway revival of "The Music Man," starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster. Who knew Mr. Willson, the songwriter, could cook as well? Here's his recipe for Beef Stroganoff from "Cooking As You Like It" by Jane Weeks Martin, 1963!
Meredith Willson's
BEEF STROGANOFF
Serves 4-6
2 pounds round steak
3 tablespoons butter
½ cup minced onions
½ pound mushrooms, sliced
1¼ teaspoons salt
⅓ teaspoon garlic powder
¾ teaspoon freshly ground
black pepper
2 teaspoons A.1. Sauce
I 8-ounce can tomato sauce
2 cups sour cream
Have the steak cut thin, then into strips 1½ inches long by ¼ inch wide.
Melt the butter in a skillet; sauté the onions 5 minutes. Add the meat and brown it. Mix in the mushrooms, salt, garlic powder, pepper, A.1. Sauce, and tomato sauce. Cover and cook
over low heat 30 minutes or until meat is tender.
Just before serving, mix in the sour cream. Heat, but do not let boil. Serve with rice
or noodles.

Hugh and Sutton bust some moves in the current Broadway revival.
Looks like there's more fun than trouble right there in River City!
