Once Upon a Menu: Better Than Sex Cake

Have you ever had a cake that's better than sex? Well this one gets pretty close.

You can poke it, top it with cherries, spread it with cream. Just a frisky little recipe you can bring to your next church social.

Better Than Sex Cake 🍒 🍰 🍍

Serves 12–15

1 box yellow cake mix (Duncan Hines Perfectly Moist Classic Yellow 15.25 oz)

Instead of 1 cup water: 3/4 cup milk and 1/4 cup sour cream

1 stick melted butter (cool before adding)

4 eggs

1 1/2 (20-ounce) cans crushed pineapple in juice (save rest to top your next bowl of ice cream)

3/4 cup light brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/4 cup whole milk

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Sweetened coconut flakes, 3/4 cup, (6 ounces), toasted 6-7 minutes in 350°F oven - watch closely

2 (8 ounces) containers Cool Whip (slightly thawed)

Maraschino cherries (10 ounces) de-stemmed

3/4 cup pecans, roughly chopped and toasted in 350°F oven 5 minutes

1 tablespoon finishing salt flakes

Heat oven to 350°F. Spray or grease a 9x13-inch baking dish or pan.

Prepare yellow cake using milk, sour cream, butter, extra egg modifications above. (Bake about 22 minutes).

In medium saucepan, simmer pineapple with all its juice, brown sugar, salt for 7–8 minutes.

While cake is still warm, poke holes with end of wooden spoon, without going all the way through cake. Evenly spoon hot pineapple mixture over cake and into holes.

In small saucepan, melt butter, vigorously stir in sugar, cocoa, milk, salt. Bring to a gentle boil, stirring, cook 1 more minute.

Pour cocoa mixture over pineapple layer while still warm.

Scatter toasted coconut over chocolate layer. If still hot, let cool.

Spread Cool Whip over. Dot with cherries. Sprinkle with pecans, dust with 1 tablespoon flaky salt.

Refrigerate at least 4 hours (covered, in case your fridge has any particularly potently-scented inhabitants).
